Thorvaldsens Museum is the only place in the world where you can see all the works of sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844).

The museum contains all the original models for Thorvaldsen’s sculptures, which can be found in public squares and museums around the world.

The museum also contains Thorvaldsen’s drawings and sketches. Thorvaldsen was a passionate collector, and the museum also exhibits his extensive collections of painting from his time, as well as collections of art and artefacts from the Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquities.  In addition the museum also show changing exhibitions including contemporary art. The museum is a pioneer when it comes to the digitization of collections and archives.

The museum opened in September 1848 and was the first public museum building in Denmark. It was built to exhibit Thorvaldsens extensive life’s work and with the amazing decorations and its completely original architecture it appears pretty much as it did when it opened more than 150 years ago.
